WSOP or the World Series of Poker is a series of poker tournaments held in Las Vegas every year. It dates back to 1970 when Benny Binion, an American business man with a dark criminal past and career in Las Vegas casinos, invited the most well-known poker players to his casino the Horseshoe, for a tournament.
In this inaugural competition thirty poker players squeezed themselves into a space no larger than an ordinary hotel room and battled it out with no media attention. Things have certainly changed in the last forty or so years with huge press coverage focused on the numerous events and thousands of players that take part.
Each winner receives a WSOP bracelet (the most coveted non-monetary poker prize) as well as a cash prize based on the number of entrants and buy-in amounts. Whilst most variants of poker are represented the “Main Event” is a $10,000 no-limit hold’em.
The winner of this event receives a bracelet, a multi-million-dollar prize and is essentially considered the Poker World Champion – not too shabby considering WSOP’s humble beginnings!
It is interesting to take note though, that many of the world’s top poker professionals actually consider that the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E/Poker Player’s championship is the true decider of the World Champion.
